Have their Back(packs): School's Out, Hunger Isn't

Although school is out for the summer, food insecurity never takes a vacation. You can help fill our backpacks with weekend meals for city children and their families as part of our Backpack Pantry Program.

Each Thursday, we’ll fill backpacks with non-perishable food, such as tuna fish, soup, fruit cups, cereal, and shelf-stable milk.  We also regularly offer fresh fruit, vegetables, and more.  Families return the following Thursday and exchange their empty backpacks for others filled with food.

Nearly 1.1 million New York City residents are food insecure and one of every ten NYC students enrolled in public schools lived in a homeless shelter during last school year. Our Backpack Pantry Program supplements the 1,000 hot meals we serve guests in the soup kitchen each weekday.

Thank you for helping ensure that the youngest members of our community have access to weekend meals this summer.
